Welcome to the first post on the Kent State Public Relations Student Society of America blog!

My name is Rebecca Odell, and I am a junior public relations major at Kent State. I serve as the online media manager for PRSSA Kent. I guess you can say I am the “techie” of the group! I will be managing the content on this blog, so you can direct any praises or slurs toward me.

I’m new to the blogging concept, so many of the wonderful senior students who have taken the PR Online Tactics course will help me through this new experience. I am looking forward to bringing you all the latest PRSSA Kent updates.

In case you’re unfamiliar with PRSSA, you should know it is a national public relations organization that provides professional development opportunities for students. PRSSA Kent is an active student organization on campus. We’re kind of a big deal.

Whether you’re a declared public relations major or considering a communications-related career, I would encourage you to attend one of our meetings. We meet every other Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in 213 Franklin Hall. PRSSA gives you the chance to network with PR professionals in the area and enjoy good conversation with your fellow classmates.

I plan to post meeting recaps, officer bios and other pertinent information on this blog. Feel free to leave a comment or e-mail me with any questions you may have. We’re a friendly bunch… I promise!

Quick reminder: Our next meeting is Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Pat Lowry, press secretary for Congressman Tim Ryan, will join us to talk about the political side of PR. Lowry coordinates all district communication activities and special projects, writes speeches and handles media relations for Congressman Ryan and his office.

Oct. 15 is also the last day to pay dues and become an official PRSSA member this year.  Dues are $50, and checks can be made to PRSSA Kent.  Membership fees are due once a year, so you’re safe if you paid in the spring.  See VP of Membership Brittany Thoma for more information.
